Devils Tower - Wyoming

Oct 9th - Devils Tower

Oct 8th raining and cold - brrrrr- went to Wall & Drug, they sell tacky tourist stuff but it was dry... The boots really intrigued Bill...

The little library was where we went to do live journal many years ago before wifi, iPads and laptops!!

How different from the day before in Badlands, loads of sunshine if VERY windy....ie 60 miles per hour winds

Devils Tower is beautiful, however pics don't reflect that as it was a 'grey' day and pics don't do it justice:(

We spent a pleasant couple of hours wandering around the base of Devils Tower, the scent of the pines was the sort of thing you would like to capture in a can!!! Permeated the air with wonderful aromas...

For film buffs Devils Tower was used in Close Encounter of the Third Kind..

Aplogies for even more Prairie Dogs pics, but I just love watching them, their antics really make you Schmile...

Devils Tower is still a sacred place for the Native American tribes they come and put prayer offerings in the trees, they called it by several names - Bears Lodge, Bears House, Bears Tipi etc...

"According to the Native American tribes of the Kiowa and Lakota Sioux, some girls went out to play and were spotted by several giant bears, who began to chase them. In an effort to escape the bears, the girls climbed atop a rock, fell to their knees, and prayed to the Great Spirit to save them. Hearing their prayers, the Great Spirit made the rock rise from the ground towards the heavens so that the bears could not reach the girls. The bears, in an effort to climb the rock, left deep claw marks in the sides, which had become too steep to climb. (Those are the marks which appear today on the sides of Devils Tower.) When the girls reached the sky, they were turned into the star constellation the Pleiades"

Picture taken fom Wickepedia!!! Bear wasn't there!!!
